National Institute of Parasitic Diseases,Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention Cambodian National Centre for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control signed an agreement on Lancang-Mekong Region Malaria Elimination Network
In order to advance the Belt and Road Initiative, promote exchanges and cooperation in the health field between China and other countries along the Belt and Road, we have launched the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC).LMC helps us practice the goals set by Chinese premier in the Lancang-Mekong region public health cooperation and the Greater Mekong Sub-regional health cooperation, embody the spirit of Premier Li Keqiang’s speech at the second Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Leaders Meeting in 2018 and achieve the initiative of building a malaria elimination network with the countries concerned. It also help to build the fate community of the Lancang-Mekong region and serve the countrys strategy of the Belt and Road.
LMC is the first new sub-regional cooperation mechanism which was established, constructed and shared by the six countries of the whole basin. It aims to give full play to the advantages of the six countries, steadily promote the mechanism construction and pragmatic cooperation, and bring well-being to the people of countries of the Lancang-Mekong sub-region.
As one of the 2019 Lancang-Mekong Week series of activities, on 21 March , 2019, during the 8th meeting of China Network on Drug and Diagnostics Innovation, Zhou Xiaonong (the director of the National Institute of Parasitic Diseases of Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention) and Dr. Huy Recol (the director of the Cambodian National Centre for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control) signed an inter-agency cooperation agreement for the Malaria Elimination Network in the Lancang-Mekong Region.
Formal partnership between Chinese and Cambodian national malaria prevention and control research institutions have been established. This will advance the promotion and application of prevention and control experience of infectious diseases in China to Cambodia and surrounding countries. It also guarantees national health security, promotes the development of the Belt and Road initiative and provides services for regional public health prevention and control.
Lancang-Mekong Week: On 23 March, 2016, the First Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Leaders Meeting was held in Sanya, Hainan. Prime Li Keqiang and the leaders of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam jointly announced the launch of new cooperation mechanism. On 10 January, 2018, the second Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Leaders Meeting was successfully held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The leaders of the six countries agreed to define the week of March 23(the day of first Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Leaders Meeting) of each year as the Lancang-Mekong Week.
