Malaria Experts participated the mission to Ethiopia and Zambia for investigation of cooperation on malaria elimination
During 9-18th May 2018, National Institute of Parasitic Diseases (NIPD) deployed staffs (Dr. Guan Yayi, Chief of Global Health Center; Dr. Zhang Shaosen, Department of Malaria; Dr. Liu Ying, Henan Provincial CDC) to participate the mission to Ethiopia and Zambia for investigation of cooperation on malaria elimination, with designation from National Health Commission (NHC) and supported by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). This mission is carried out to response the call from Chinese President for enhancing the health cooperation with African countries, with target to promote the participation to Global Health Governance and contribution to Global Malaria Elimination Campaign, as well as ensuring the achievement for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of United Nations (UN).
The mission team was consisted of ten experts from Roll Back Malaria Partnership (RBM), Global Malaria Program (GMP) and Southern and Eastern Africa regional office of World Health Organization (WHO), BMGF, NIPD and Henan Provincial Center for Disease Control and prevention (Henan CDC, China) respectively.
To understand the malaria situation and national malaria strategic plan in each country, meetings were carried out with officers and technical staffs in Ministry of Health (MOH), Department of pharmaceutical supply and administration, National Public Health Institute (NPHI) and National Malaria Program in each country. The mission team visited the referral hospital and rural health center in selected areas of each country to understand the anti-malaria work of health system in each country. The partner agencies of national malaria program (i.e. PMI, PATH/MACEPA, etc.), Chinese Embassy to Zambia and China medical team in each country were also visited to get advises on further collaboration on malaria elimination
After the further analysis on the data collected from the field visit to these two countries, the mission team will develop a report in detail to make suggestions to further China-Africa cooperation on malaria elimination to policy makers in China, based on the request of target country and the principle of “country ownership, country led”.
