The 3rd Seminar on Sino-Burmese Border Malaria Elimination Held in Naypyidaw, Myanmar
To drive the malaria elimination on the Sino-Burmese
border, the 3rd Seminar on Sino-Burmese Border Malaria Elimination was held in
Naypyidaw, Myanmar on September 6-8, 2017, which was sponsored by WHO and
hosted by the Ministry of Health and Sports of Myanmar. Mr. Xie Guoxiang, Counselor
of the Chinese Embassy in Myanmar, Dr. Kyaw Zin Thant, Director of Medical
Research Division of the Ministry of Health and Sports of Myanmar, Dr. Thandar
Lwin, Deputy Director of Disease Control Department, and Dr. Yan Jun, Director,
Division of Schistosomiasis and Endemic Diseases, Bureau of Disease Control, China
National Health and Family Planning Commission attended the seminar and
delivered speeches. More than 50 people attended the seminar including Dr. Zhou
Xiaonong, Director of National Institute of Parasitic Diseases(NIPD), Chinese Center for
Disease Control and Prevention, Mr. Li Yong, Director, Bureau of Disease
Control, Health and Family Planning Commission of Yunnan Province, Mr. Zhou
Hongning, Director of Yunnan Institute of Parasitic Diseases and other experts
and officials from Country Offices of World Health Organization in Myanmar and
China, HPA and other international organizations.
Officials of
both sides agreed that this seminar laid a good foundation for deepening the
cooperation of Sino-Burmese public health and promoting malaria prevention and
control at the border based on the previous two sessions of the seminar on Sino-Burmese
border malaria elimination in the context of Chinas "Belt & Road"
strategy. The seminar reviewed the draft of “Action Plan on Malaria Elimination
on the Sino-Burmese Border (2016-2030)”. Guided by the thinking of “Same Region
Same Strategy” and in response to the weak reporting system in Myanmar, the
lack of personnel capacity and the lack of reference laboratory, cooperation in
four aspects including information sharing, capacity building, health system
promotion and active participation of partners is strengthened to reach a
consensus so as to better respond to the Greater Mekong Subregion of multiple
drug resistance and malaria control among floating population to speed up the
process of eliminating malaria in the region. The participants at the meeting also
discussed the improvement of the cross-border cooperation mechanism of Sino-Burmese
malaria elimination at the border and the establishment of the Sino-Burmese
Malaria Elimination Panel and the Working Group and other matters, and decided
to seek the support of both governments to further improve the implementation
of the 2018-2019 program, prepare for the detailed work plan, and regularly
convene a quarterly meeting about China-Burma border counties. Finally, the 4th
Seminar on Sino-Burmese Border Malaria Elimination was decided to be held in
April 2018 in Ruili City, Yunnan Province, in which customs and other relevant
departments were invited to participate.
During the
seminar, the Chinese delegation visited County Hospital and Rural Health Center
in Takone to know the working mechanism of health system and disease prevention
and control in Myanmar. As the WHO Collaborating Centre for Tropical Diseases,
NIPD hosted the first two seminars and convened this one in coordination with
the relevant agencies.
