Training and fellowships

TDRs grant and training activities aim to develop strong leadership in health research and decision making, so that high quality institutional and national systems can identify and manage research priorities. Grant opportunities include support for post-graduate academic training, career development, short courses and research.

TDR advanced postdoctoral research and training grants in implementation research – 2014

The Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) invites applications for advanced postdoctoral research and/or training grants from individuals who are nationals of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

Two types of grants are offered: strategic support for re-entry and postdoctoral research and training grants for the acquisition of special skills relevant to research, research management or leadership:

Re-entry grants: Research-based mentorship and support (maximum US$ 25 000 per year for up to 2 years) for PhD holders employed and returning to their home institution within 24 months after graduation.
Postdoctoral advanced training and research: including short-term attachments to acquire leadership and research skills related to leadership and research activities not available within the home country or institutions.
Eligibility
The target age bracket is 35-40 years old. Applications from individuals returning to their home institutions from an institution within their country, another LMIC or high-income country are eligible. All applications must be proposed as an integral part of an institutional development programme where they are employed and the career plan for the applicant defined. For both schemes, priority will be given to proposals addressing themes related to implementation research in public health. Grantees are expected to exhibit scientific expertise in their chosen field, promote the development of their home institution research environment and disseminate their research findings, including peer-reviewed open access publications, on completion of their grants.

Applications are welcome from individuals working in ministries of health with responsibility for planning, implementing research and/or evaluating disease control programmes related to infectious diseases of poverty.

TDR postgraduate training grants in implementation research – 2014

Submission deadline 7 February 2014
The Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) invites applications for postgraduate training grants leading to MSc and PhD degrees focused on disciplines relevant to implementation research (such as, but not limited to, epidemiology, social sciences, biostatistics, health economics, health/medical education, health information systems, community and environmental health).

The training may take place in the home country of the applicant, another low- and middle-income country (LMIC), or a high-income country.

Eligibility
Only applications from individuals who are nationals of and based in LMICs will be considered. Specific focus will be given to applicants from least developed countries. The target age bracket is 25-30 years for MSc grants and up to 35 years for PhD grants. Applicants must have no more than three and five years post-graduation for men and women respectively. Preference will be given to candidates who have a provisional acceptance or course registration in an accredited university in addition to being employed in their home institution. Priority will be given to local or regional training. Applicants already registered for a doctoral degree in their home country requesting support for their thesis research should provide evidence of registration, research project proposal (with ethical clearance if applicable), as well as an itemized fully justified budget up to a maximum amount of US$ 20 000.

PAHO/TDR Call for Regional Small Grants Proposals

Prevention and control of maternal to child transmission of Chagas disease, hepatitis, syphilis and HIV
Deadline for application (revised): 31 January 2014
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Special Programme for Research and Control in Tropical diseases (TDR) invite health professionals and investigators from institutions in the PAHO Region to submit research proposals addressing operational issues related to health care access for pregnant women and children, and strategies to integrate diagnostic and treatment services for Chagas diseases, hepatitis, syphilis and HIV. The principal investigators of selected proposals will be invited to a project development workshop to further develop their proposals and plans.

AFRO-TDR small grants programme (2013)
The World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa (AFRO), in collaboration with the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), is seeking research proposals for the Small Grants Programme (SGP) for implementation research in disease prevention and control and health systems research. SUBMISSIONS ARE CLOSED.

Joint EMRO/TDR small grants scheme
The Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office for the World Health Organization (EMRO), in collaboration with the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), is seeking applications for implementation research in communicable diseases. SUBMISSIONS ARE CLOSED.

Impact Grant
This is a new short-term grant scheme designed for nationals from low- and middle-income countries. Support under this grant is flexible, based on public health relevance, scientific quality and the feasibility of achieving results within one year. Twenty to thirty new grants (up to US$ 50 000, non-renewed) will be awarded. The awarded recipients will be notified this summer, with funding to begin in September. SUBMISSIONS ARE CLOSED.

Implementation Research Training Workshop - 7 – 12 July 2013 Gaborone, Botswana
The workshop is part of a module-based toolkit designed to strengthen implementation research capacity in the following areas: contextualizing research, ethics, planning and conducting an IR project, data collection and management, analysis of results, dissemination of findings, and monitoring and evaluation of the uptake of evidence in the health system.
